Quickly show me how to create a timeline

These instructions show the steps in creating a timeline file containing a single simple event. You can repeat the steps to create larger timelines.

  1. Start the QEditor application
  2. The editor starts with an new timeline with the timezone set to your local timezone.
  3. Create a category
    • Select the tab labeled "categories" with your mouse.
    • Choose New Element in the Entry menu
      • A new row appears in the categories list.
      • Ignore the errors in the Error list. As you fill in values they will disappear.
      • Select the first field (in the column "name") in the new row.
    • Give the category a name by typing the letters "mycat" and the "Enter" key

  4. Create an event
    • Select the tab labeled "events" with your mouse.
    • Choose New Element in the Entry menu
      • A new row appears in the events list.
      • The first field (in the column "name") should be selected already
    • Type the letters "vacation" and the "Enter" key

  5. Attach the event to the category
    • Move the selection to the "categories" column
    • Hit the "space" key to open the category editor
    • With your mouse, select the box in the first column on the row named "mycat."
      • A check should appear in the box.
    • Choose the "Accept" button in the category editor.

  6. Set the event times
    • Move the selection to the "start" column.
    • Hit the "space" key to open the time editor
    • Choose a date from the calendar. The buttons to the left move the calendar back by month or years. The buttons on the right move forward. You can also type a date and time directly in the box at the top of the time editor.
    • Click the "Accept" button at the bottom.
      • You have set the start time of the event
    • Move the selection to the "end" column and set a date like you did for the "start" column. It must be later than the start date.

  7. Create a style class for the event
    • Go to the Styles list by choosing the "styles" tab.
    • Choose New Element in the Entry menu
    • A new row appears in the styles list.
    • Select the "selector" column in the new row.
    • Type ".mystyle" (note the leading period) and "Enter".
    • Move to the color column and hit the spacebar. The color editor will appear.
    • In the Preview section at the bottom of the color editor, check the box labeled "color".
    • Choose a color from the palette.
    • Click the OK button at the bottom.
    • You should see your color in the color column. (The black bar is used to indicate a color's opacity.)

  8. Set the event's style class
    • Return to the event list by selecting the "events" tab.
    • Move to the "class" column.
    • Type "mystyle" (without the leading period) and the "Enter" key.

  9. Save your timeline file to disk.
    • Choose Save in the File menu
    • The file chooser dialog will appear
    • Choose the directory/folder where you want to save the file.
    • Type in a file name "mydates"

    • Choose the "Save" button.
      • You have created the "mydates.quotid" timeline file.
  10. Close the QEditor
    • Choose Exit in the File menu.
  11. Start the QViewer and load "mydates.quotid".
